What should you know about an ECG at home machine?

The device may show a regular rhythm, an irregular pattern, or an unreadable recording. Movement, loose contact, dry skin, or incorrect sensor placement can affect the tracing. A normal-looking result does not explain every cause of chest discomfort, breathlessness, fainting, or a fast heartbeat, and an alert does not identify the cause by itself.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions and sit quietly while recording. Keep the date, time, symptoms, and activity beside each tracing so a clinician can compare them. Do not change prescribed medicines based only on a device message. Arrange a GP consultation if readings remain unusual or symptoms recur; take the device or saved recordings if requested.

Seek emergency care for chest pressure or pain that does not settle, severe difficulty breathing, collapse, new confusion, or fainting with ongoing palpitations. Do not delay help while repeating a home recording. A machine is an aid to assessment, not a substitute for urgent clinical examination.
