Why a cold can cause coughing
Viral irritation can make the throat and breathing tubes sensitive. Mucus from a blocked or runny nose may drip backwards and trigger coughing, while a dry cough can linger after other cold symptoms improve. Cough can also occur with Acute Bronchitis or Common Cold, but Acid Reflux, Allergic Rhinitis, and Asthma can produce similar symptoms.
The character of the cough matters: note whether it is dry or brings up mucus, whether it is worse at night, and whether wheezing, fever, chest pain, or breathlessness accompanies it. A cough lasting beyond the expected recovery period should be assessed, particularly if it keeps returning.
Comfort measures at home
Sip warm fluids, use a humidified room if comfortable, and consider honey for adults and children over one year. Avoid tobacco smoke, vaping aerosols, and strong fragrances. Rest and use simple measures for nasal congestion, such as saline, if suitable for you.
Check labels before taking cough or cold medicines because products may contain overlapping ingredients. Ask a pharmacist about options for pregnancy, children, long-term conditions, or regular medicines. Antibiotics do not treat viral colds.
When a cough needs medical care
Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Arrange prompt review for a high or persistent fever, dehydration, worsening symptoms after initial improvement, or a cough in someone with significant lung disease. Recurrent or long-lasting cough may need assessment for conditions such as Chronic Cough or Bronchiectasis.
Useful questions
Ask whether the cough fits a viral illness, whether your chest needs examination, which medicine is safe with your health history, and what change should prompt review. Mention wheezing, reflux symptoms, allergies, smoking exposure, or a cough that wakes you.

Questions people ask
Can a cough remain after a cold?
Yes. Airway irritation can continue after nasal and throat symptoms improve, but a persistent or worsening cough should be assessed.
Do antibiotics help a cold cough?
They do not treat the viruses that cause ordinary colds. A clinician decides whether another infection is present.
