Early scan dates 2 weeks out: what to know

Pregnancy dating commonly starts from the first day of the last menstrual period, while conception occurs later and cycles do not all follow the same pattern. An early scan uses measurements and visible development to estimate gestational age. If the pregnancy is too early to see clearly, a repeat scan after an interval can answer more than a single inconclusive image. A difference between the expected date and the scan date does not, by itself, show that anything is wrong.

Bring the date of your last period, usual cycle length, pregnancy test information and any earlier scan report. Follow the clinic’s instructions about bladder preparation, and ask whether the scan will be abdominal or internal. Keep the follow-up appointment even if symptoms are mild, because the comparison between scans can help clarify location, dating and development. Later pregnancy screening, such as a nuchal translucency scan, is a separate examination with a different purpose.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. Contact your maternity team promptly for persistent pain, bleeding or fever. Do not wait for a planned repeat scan if symptoms become intense or you feel suddenly unwell.
