What should you know about early dengue rashes?

Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes. The rash can look flat, blotchy, or flushed and may appear as fever develops or changes. Fever is a common presentation of dengue, while chills, headache, muscle aches, and joint pain may occur alongside it. Other infections, medicines, and allergic reactions can also cause a rash, so appearance is not enough to identify the cause. Note when the fever and rash began, whether the rash fades under gentle pressure, and any new bleeding or bruising.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use only medicines advised by a clinician or pharmacist; avoid aspirin or ibuprofen until a professional has considered dengue because they may increase bleeding risk. Reduce mosquito bites with repellent, covered clothing, and screens while fever is present.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, easy bruising, extreme drowsiness, breathing difficulty, fainting, or inability to drink. Warning signs can appear as fever settles, so continue monitoring rather than assuming improvement means the illness is over.
