Can an earache cause a headache?

The ear, nose, sinuses, jaw, and upper neck share closely connected nerves and pressure pathways. A blocked nose from a common cold or allergic rhinitis may interfere with pressure equalisation around the middle ear and create aching with a dull head pain. Sinus inflammation can add facial pressure. Jaw clenching, tooth problems, or neck tension may also be felt near the ear and temple. These symptoms do not identify one condition by themselves.

Notice whether the pain is on one side, follows congestion, changes with chewing or swallowing, or comes with fever, discharge, reduced hearing, dizziness, or light sensitivity. Those details help a clinician examine the ear and consider other nearby causes.

Rest, drink fluids, and use a warm compress against the outer ear or side of the face. Keep sound levels comfortable and avoid putting cotton buds, oil, or unprescribed drops into the ear. If congestion is present, gentle nasal saline may help; blow your nose softly rather than forcefully. Use a usual pain reliever only if it is suitable for you and follow its label directions. Do not start leftover antibiotics.

Arrange medical assessment if the pain is severe, keeps returning, or does not settle, especially with hearing change or ear discharge. Seek urgent care for swelling behind the ear, a very severe or sudden headache, confusion, weakness, a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or trouble staying awake. A fever with worsening ear pain also warrants prompt advice.
