What should you know about ear splinting?

A clinician fits a small splint against the ear to maintain a gentle shape or reduce movement. The support may be used after an injury, for a cartilage-shape concern, or during healing. It should not press hard enough to cause numbness, increasing pain, colour change, or skin damage. Materials such as thermoplastic can be moulded to the individual ear, while a removable design allows skin checks and cleaning.

Ear splinting is different from a cast. A cast is generally more fixed and is used for selected fractures; a splint may allow swelling and regular inspection. The correct design depends on the ear area involved and whether the skin is intact.

Arrange an assessment before buying or making a splint. Keep the ear clean and dry as instructed, and check the skin whenever the support is removed. Follow the prescribed wearing schedule rather than tightening it when the ear feels uncomfortable. Do not place adhesive over broken skin or use a hand splint designed for another body part.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, warmth, discharge, fever, new bleeding, or an ear that becomes pale, blue, or cold. Urgent assessment is also sensible after a significant blow if the ear is badly swollen, visibly misshapen, or hearing changes occur.

Ask what problem the splint is treating, how it should sit, how often the skin needs checking, and what signs mean it should be removed. Ask whether a moulded thermoplastic support or another form of splinting is appropriate.
