Ear plugs for snoring: what to know

Short answer

Ear plugs may lessen the noise of snoring for you, yet they cannot remove the cause or manage breathing interruptions during sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Benefit
Less sound for the listener
Limit
No treatment for the snorer's airway

Understanding the limitation

Snoring occurs when relaxed tissues in the nose or throat vibrate as air passes. A plug changes the sound at your ear, not airflow in the snorer's airway. Frequent snoring can accompany nasal congestion, Chronic Sinusitis, body-weight-related airway narrowing, or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Safer ways to try them

Choose a comfortable size, insert gently, and clean reusable plugs as directed. Never share them. Remove plugs for soreness, itching or blockage, and do not use them where you must hear an alarm. The person who snores should seek advice about nasal symptoms, sleep position and evening habits.

When snoring needs attention

Seek advice for pauses in breathing, gasping, choking, morning headaches or excessive daytime sleepiness. These symptoms need assessment even if plugs make the night quieter. Stop plugs and seek ear advice for pain, discharge, dizziness or sudden hearing change.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether sleep-apnoea testing is appropriate, whether nasal symptoms contribute, and which plug material suits sensitive ears.
