Ear cut stitches: what should you know?

The clinician checks bleeding, wound depth, the cartilage, nearby skin, and movement or sensation. Surgical Sutures bring the edges together so healing can occur with protection from movement and contamination. Some cuts need a different approach, especially if cartilage is exposed, tissue is missing, or the injury is badly contaminated.

Keep the dressing and wound clean and dry as directed. Avoid picking at the stitches, pressure on the ear, and activities that may catch the thread. Take prescribed treatment as instructed, and attend the planned review so the wound and stitch removal timing can be checked. Ask about Tetanus Vaccination if the cut was dirty or your vaccination history is uncertain.

Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, a deep or gaping wound, exposed cartilage, loss of sensation, or an ear that looks misshapen. After repair, seek review for spreading redness, increasing swelling, worsening pain, pus, fever, or stitches that split. A bite or heavily contaminated wound also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the cartilage is involved, how long the dressing should stay on, and when the wound should be reviewed. Clarify whether the stitches dissolve or need removal, which warning signs matter, and whether tetanus protection is up to date.
