E coli mastitis symptoms: what to know

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue, sometimes with a bacterial infection. E coli is one possible bacterial cause. Symptoms can affect one area or much of one breast and may develop alongside breast tenderness, a firm area, or pain during feeding. A breast infection can make you feel tired or generally ill. These signs do not identify the exact germ on their own; a clinician may consider your feeding history, examination, and response to treatment.

Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk if this is comfortable, because regular milk removal can reduce pressure. Avoid forceful massage, tight clothing, and suddenly stopping feeds. Rest, drink fluids, and use a cool pack over the breast for short periods. A clinician can decide whether antibiotics are appropriate and which medicine fits your situation. A lactation consultation can help check latch, positioning, and milk-removal patterns.

Arrange prompt medical care for fever, chills, rapidly worsening redness or swelling, severe pain, pus, or feeling faint or very unwell. Seek urgent help if you have confusion, breathing difficulty, or signs of severe illness. If symptoms are not improving after the care plan begins, contact the clinician again; a collection of pus or another breast problem may need assessment.
