Dull pain during ovulation: what to know

As an ovary releases an egg, stretching of its surface and fluid from the follicle can irritate nearby tissue. This may produce a dull ache or brief cramp on one side of the lower abdomen. Some people notice it shift sides in different cycles, while others feel it centrally. The symptom can occur with light spotting, but heavy bleeding is not typical of simple ovulation pain.

Endometriosis can present with pelvic pain that follows a cycle, and an ovarian cyst can present with pressure or one-sided pain. The direction matters: these conditions may cause the symptom, but the symptom alone does not establish either diagnosis.

Record when the pain begins, how long it lasts, where it is, and whether it affects walking, sleep, sex, bowel movements, or urination. A warm pack and suitable non-prescription pain relief may be enough for mild symptoms. Check medicine suitability if you may be pregnant, have stomach or kidney problems, or take blood thinners. A clinician should also assess pain that lasts beyond the expected mid-cycle window or keeps returning with increasing intensity.
