Dulcolax after a C-section: what to know

Pain medicines, reduced movement, changes in food and fluids, and the effects of surgery can slow bowel movements. Fear of straining around the incision can make the problem feel harder to manage. Dulcolax is a brand name used for bisacodyl products in some markets; tablets stimulate bowel activity, while suppositories act through the rectum. Products and instructions differ, so read the local label and confirm which form you have.

Constipation is different from an inability to pass gas with increasing abdominal swelling, vomiting, or severe pain. Those symptoms need assessment rather than repeated doses of a laxative.

Follow the discharge instructions from your maternity team and take only the recommended amount. Drink fluids if you have not been told to restrict them, choose fibre-containing foods as tolerated, and walk gently when cleared. Do not crush a delayed-release tablet, and do not take it at the same time as milk or an antacid unless the label or clinician says this is suitable. Ask about alternatives if you are breastfeeding, have haemorrhoids, or use opioid pain relief.

Contact your maternity team if constipation continues despite the advised plan, or if you need frequent laxative doses. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen hard abdomen, inability to pass gas, heavy rectal bleeding, fever, or a red, opening, or increasingly painful incision.
