Dry skin and psoriasis

Psoriasis often forms clearly outlined areas with scale, commonly on the scalp, elbows, knees, or other sites, although facial or body involvement can occur. Itchy skin, redness, cracking, peeling, and scaling may accompany the plaques. Dry skin is also common without psoriasis, so a clinician considers the distribution, recurrence, nail changes, joint symptoms, and personal history.

Keep bathing gentle and brief, use lukewarm water, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after washing. Do not scratch, pick scale, or aggressively scrub plaques, because injury can worsen irritation. Follow any prescribed psoriasis plan consistently and tell the clinician if treatment stings, the skin cracks, or symptoms spread. Moisturising can support comfort but does not replace assessment of active psoriasis.

Arrange review for persistent or recurrent plaques, painful fissures, extensive peeling, or a rash affecting daily activities. Seek prompt medical care for rapidly widespread redness, severe pain, pus, fever, or a sudden change involving much of the skin. Mention morning stiffness, swollen fingers, heel pain, or other joint symptoms because psoriasis can involve joints.
