What should you know about dry perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash that tends to cluster around the mouth, while the skin immediately next to the lips may look relatively clear. It can also appear beside the nose or around the eyes. The area may feel dry, sensitive, burning, or itchy, with tiny bumps that resemble pimples. This presentation is a feature of Perioral Dermatitis, rather than proof that every dry patch around the mouth has that condition.

Irritating skincare, heavy occlusive products, friction, and topical corticosteroids can aggravate the rash. Scrubbing, picking, or repeatedly changing products may keep the skin unsettled.

Keep cleansing simple with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry instead of rubbing, and pause exfoliants, scrubs, fragranced products, and cosmetics that sting. A plain, light moisturiser may reduce tightness, but stop it if the area burns or the bumps increase.

Do not start or stop a steroid cream on the face without medical advice; symptoms can flare after steroid use is changed.
