Dry, flaky, sore scalp: what it may mean and what to do

Fine white flakes with mild itch may fit dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined scales can occur with scalp psoriasis. A tender patch with broken hairs, swelling, or crusting needs consideration of scalp ringworm, especially after contact with an infected person or animal. New hair products, frequent scratching, heat, or tight hairstyles may worsen irritation.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and avoid picking, vigorous scrubbing, fragranced products, and tight headwear while the scalp settles. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether medicated shampoo treatment suits your symptoms and how long to use it. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if an infection is possible. Photograph the area if its appearance changes.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for marked tenderness, pus, spreading redness, swollen glands, bleeding, patchy hair loss, or a scalp area that is not improving. Prompt review matters when ringworm is possible because treatment may require more than shampoo. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, or feeling acutely unwell.

Ask whether the scale looks more like dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or ringworm; whether a product should be stopped; and whether the hair loss, soreness, or crusting needs testing.
