Dry, Flaky Scalp and Eyebrows: What It Can Mean

Flaking in both the scalp and eyebrows commonly occurs when skin becomes inflamed or sheds too quickly. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can affect oily areas around the scalp, eyebrows, nose, and ears; itch or greasy scale may accompany the flakes. Psoriasis may produce thicker, more sharply defined scale that extends beyond the hairline. A scaly, itchy patch with broken hairs or a small area of hair loss needs assessment for scalp ringworm, which requires medical treatment. Dryness can also follow cold air, hot water, frequent washing, or a new hair or skin product.

The flakes alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the scale is fine or thick, white or yellowish, and whether the skin underneath is red, sore, or cracked.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid picking the scale, vigorous brushing, and hair products that sting. Keep shampoo away from the eyes and rinse the eyebrow area carefully. If flaking keeps returning, a clinician or pharmacist can help you choose a medicated shampoo treatment and explain how to use it safely on the scalp. Do not share combs, hats, brushes, or towels while an infection is possible. Take a clear photograph when the scaling is visible and note any products used before it started.

Arrange a dermatology review if the problem persists despite gentle care, spreads to the face or ears, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus, crusting, fever, rapidly developing hair loss, or tender patches with broken hairs. Get urgent help if swelling around the eyes affects vision or is accompanied by severe pain. A clinician may examine the scalp and eyebrows closely and test a scale or hair when an infection is suspected.
