Dry cough and nasal drip: what to know

Nasal drainage may feel like a tickle, frequent throat clearing, a blocked nose, or a sensation of mucus at the back of the throat. Allergic rhinitis is a common condition that presents with nasal symptoms and can trigger this irritation. A common cold can do the same while it settles. Acid reflux may cause a dry cough even without obvious heartburn, especially after meals or when lying down. Asthma can present with cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or breathlessness; bronchitis may follow a respiratory infection. These patterns overlap, so timing and associated symptoms matter.

Drink fluids regularly and try a saline nasal spray or rinse if it is suitable for you. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air. If symptoms follow meals or worsen overnight, leave time between eating and lying down and discuss reflux treatment with a clinician. Do not start antibiotics for a cough without an assessment. A pharmacist can check whether an antihistamine or other product is appropriate, particularly if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Arrange a GP assessment if the cough persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or comes with wheeze, breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier advice.
