Short answer

A dry cough produces little or no mucus and can follow irritation, infection, allergy, asthma, or acid reflux; its duration and accompanying symptoms help guide next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mucus
A dry cough produces little or no phlegm.
Common triggers
Irritation, viral illness, allergy, asthma, and acid reflux can trigger it.
Urgent warning
Severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, or coughing blood needs urgent help.

What a dry cough can mean

A cough is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the throat and airways. Dry air, smoke, dust, strong fragrances, and repeated throat clearing can keep the reflex active even after the original irritation has settled. A dry cough may also occur during or after a viral illness such as the common cold or acute bronchitis.

Some conditions present with a dry cough. Asthma can cause cough with wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness, while acid reflux can irritate the throat and trigger coughing, often after meals or when lying down. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing, nasal blockage, or mucus dripping into the throat. A cough lasting beyond the expected recovery period deserves clinical review; persistent cough has several possible causes, including chronic cough, and should not be self-diagnosed from the cough alone.

What you can do

Sip fluids regularly and try warm drinks to soothe an irritated throat. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, and reduce exposure to dust, sprays, and other personal triggers. A humidified room may feel more comfortable, but keep any humidifier clean. Honey may soothe cough in adults and children over one year old; do not give honey to infants under one year. Rest and avoid strenuous activity if coughing is tiring.

Check the label before using an over-the-counter cough product, especially if you are pregnant, giving medicine to a child, or taking other medicines. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment, because many coughs are linked to viral illness or irritation rather than bacteria. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether you need tests or treatment for an underlying cause.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, sudden confusion, fainting, or chest pain that is severe or does not settle. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cough blood, develop a high fever with worsening symptoms, or feel markedly unwell.

Arrange a medical appointment if the cough is worsening, repeatedly disrupts sleep, returns often, or continues without a clear improvement. Mention any wheeze, breathlessness, reflux symptoms, allergy symptoms, fever, weight change, or exposure to smoke and workplace dust. Children, older adults, and people with lung or immune conditions may need earlier advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What could be triggering my cough? Do my breathing symptoms suggest asthma or another airway problem? Could reflux or nasal allergy be irritating my throat? Do I need an examination, breathing test, or chest imaging? Which treatments are suitable with my current medicines?

Questions people ask

How is a dry cough different from a chesty cough?

A dry cough produces little or no mucus, whereas a chesty cough brings up phlegm. The distinction helps describe symptoms but does not identify the cause by itself.

Can acid reflux cause a dry cough?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat and trigger coughing, sometimes with a sour taste, hoarseness, or symptoms that are worse after meals or when lying down.

When should a dry cough be checked?

Arrange an appointment when the cough is worsening, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or continues without clear improvement. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty or coughing blood.
