What should you know about dry bark like cough?

The sound can come from inflammation around the voice box, throat or airways. A common cold or acute bronchitis may irritate the tubes that carry air. Allergic rhinitis can cause drainage that repeatedly triggers coughing, while asthma may cause cough with wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. A cough lasting beyond the expected illness period deserves review, especially if it is changing, disturbing sleep or affecting activity.

Sip fluids, use warm drinks if soothing, and avoid smoke, dust, strong fragrances and very dry air. Rest your voice if the cough feels high in the throat. Honey may soothe cough in adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant. A pharmacist can discuss suitable treatment after checking your age, medicines and other conditions. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment; they do not treat every cause of cough.

Seek urgent help for difficult or noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, coughing blood or inability to swallow. Children with a barking cough need particular attention if they drool, struggle to breathe or make a harsh sound while breathing in.

Ask what part of the airway may be irritated, whether you need a breathing examination, and which warning signs should prompt urgent care. Mention when the cough began, whether it is worse at night, and any wheeze, reflux, fever or exposure to irritants.
