What should you know about DOTATATE PET-CT?

DOTATATE is linked to a radioactive tracer and can attach to somatostatin receptors on many neuroendocrine tumour cells. PET detects distribution and CT shows anatomy. This can support staging, investigation of an unclear primary site, treatment planning, or review of a known tumour.

Some normal tissues naturally take up the tracer, and small or receptor-poor lesions may be less visible. The written report, earlier images, symptoms, and other tests help the specialist interpret the scan.

Tell the centre if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease, or use medicines that affect somatostatin receptors. Ask whether a medicine needs timing around the appointment; do not change it without instructions. The visit usually includes an intravenous injection, quiet waiting, and imaging while you lie still.

Follow the centre's advice about hydration and contact with pregnant people or young children after the scan. Keep the appointment details and ask how results will be communicated.

Report trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, a spreading rash, faintness, or severe pain without delay during or after the appointment. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty or collapse. Call your care team if you cannot keep fluids down or symptoms worsen at home.
