What should you know about a DOTANOC PET scan?

DOTANOC is designed to bind to somatostatin receptors, which can be present on some neuroendocrine tumours. PET shows where the tracer collects, while CT shows the related anatomy. This can help locate a primary tumour, map disease, or support treatment planning. Uptake is not a diagnosis by itself: inflammation, normal organs and other findings can affect the picture, so a specialist compares the scan with your history and other tests.

Tell the nuclear medicine team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney disease, medicines and any recent treatments that affect somatostatin receptors. Ask whether a long-acting analogue or other medicine needs special timing. Follow instructions about eating and drinking, rest quietly after injection, and remain still during imaging. Drink fluids afterward if the team recommends this and follow their guidance about close contact for the rest of the day.

Alert staff at once for breathing difficulty, swelling, faintness, severe dizziness or a rapidly spreading rash after the injection. Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, collapse or new confusion after leaving the centre.
