What should you know about a DOPA PET scan of the brain?

Short answer

A DOPA PET brain scan uses a DOPA-based tracer and PET-CT imaging to show activity in selected brain tissues.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the images show

After injection, the tracer reaches the brain and highlights patterns of uptake that may help specialists assess a suspected tumour or another diagnostic question. PET adds information about tissue activity; CT supplies structural detail, and MRI may still be needed for close brain anatomy. Areas of uptake are not automatically cancer. The report is read with your symptoms, examination, previous scans and any tissue results.

Getting ready

Share pregnancy or breastfeeding status, diabetes, kidney concerns, medicines and any difficulty lying still. Follow the centre’s instructions about food, fluids and medicines. Plan to rest quietly after the tracer is given and limit movement during image capture. Bring prior imaging if requested, and arrange a contact person if anxiety, weakness or the need for support may make the visit difficult.

When urgent help matters

Tell staff immediately about breathing difficulty, swelling, faintness, severe headache, new weakness, a seizure, or confusion after injection or during the visit. New neurological symptoms require urgent assessment rather than waiting for the scan report. Follow the imaging team’s instructions about fluids and radiation precautions after the appointment.

Questions to bring

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, whether MRI or another tracer is also needed, and whether contrast will be used. Clarify how medicines and diabetes affect preparation, who will explain the report, and what happens if the result is unclear.

Questions people ask

Can a DOPA PET brain scan replace an MRI?

Usually it answers a different question. Your specialist may request both because PET and MRI provide complementary information.

Will an abnormal area prove that a brain tumour is cancerous?

No. Uptake needs clinical interpretation and sometimes tissue examination before the nature of an area is known.
