Does Hives Cause Skin Swelling?

Hives involve a temporary skin reaction in which chemical signals make nearby small blood vessels leak fluid into the surrounding tissue. The result can be raised, itchy welts and deeper swelling called angioedema. Deeper swelling may feel tight, warm, or tender and can last longer than a surface welt. It may occur with or without visible hives. Common triggers include a medicine, food, infection, heat, pressure, or an unknown cause; swelling alone has several possible explanations.

Remove tight jewellery or clothing from the affected area and use a cool compress. Avoid heat, alcohol, vigorous rubbing, and any suspected trigger while you monitor changes. Photographing the swelling and recording when it began can help a clinician. Ask a pharmacist or doctor whether an antihistamine is appropriate for you, especially if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take regular medicines. Do not rely on home treatment if swelling is progressing.

Get emergency help at once for swelling of the tongue, throat, or inside the mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a hoarse voice, wheezing, dizziness, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction. Seek prompt assessment for swelling that is one-sided, very painful, hot, associated with fever, or accompanied by eye pain or vision changes. Arrange medical review when swelling returns without a clear trigger or does not settle.
