Does urinary tract infection cause bedwetting?

A urinary infection can irritate the bladder, creating urgency and more frequent urges to pass urine. Night-time bladder irritation may lead to wetting, including in a child who had been dry at night. Burning, daytime accidents, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, fever, or unusual urine smell may occur alongside it.

Bedwetting has other possible explanations, including normal developmental patterns, constipation, stress, sleep changes, diabetes, or bladder and nerve conditions. Bedwetting by itself does not identify the cause, but new wetting after a period of dryness deserves attention.

Arrange a medical review when bedwetting begins suddenly, happens with pain or fever, or is accompanied by frequent daytime urination or accidents. A clinician may ask about toileting, bowel habits, fluid intake, and previous wetting, then test a urine sample.

Offer regular toilet opportunities and normal daytime fluids. Avoid blaming, shaming, or restricting drinks excessively. If treatment is prescribed, give it exactly as directed and ask whether a repeat urine check or follow-up is needed.

Seek urgent medical help if bedwetting occurs with high fever, side or back pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. New wetting with marked thirst and frequent urination also needs prompt assessment.
