Does trichomoniasis cause vaginal itching?

Trichomoniasis can irritate the vaginal and vulval tissues, leading to itching, soreness, burning or redness. Discomfort may be felt around the vaginal opening and can be worse during urination or sex. Symptoms vary, and some people with the infection notice little or nothing.

Thrush, contact irritation, skin conditions and other infections can also cause vaginal itching. A clinician may examine the area and collect a swab or other sample. Avoid scented washes, sprays and douching while waiting for assessment, since they can worsen irritation.

Book sexual-health or gynaecology care for new or persistent itching, especially after a new sexual contact. Avoid sex until you have advice and testing. If trichomoniasis is diagnosed, take the prescribed treatment and follow instructions about partner assessment; do not share medication.

Arrange prompt care if itching occurs with unusual discharge, pelvic pain, fever, sores, bleeding after sex or painful urination. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fainting, rapidly worsening swelling or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask which causes should be tested, whether a swab is needed, how to protect irritated skin, and when sex can safely resume. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, new products or medicines, and any recent sexual exposure.
