Does a stye cause eye discharge?

A stye is a tender, localised infection or inflammation near an eyelash or eyelid gland. Discharge may collect at the lash line, form a small crust, or make the eyelids stick together after sleep. Mild redness and watering can occur around the same area.

Discharge spread across the eye, marked itch, or symptoms in both eyes may fit another eye problem. Eye discharge alone cannot identify its cause, so the surrounding symptoms and an examination matter.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eyelid. Apply a clean, warm, damp cloth over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating it through the day, and gently wipe away softened crust with clean water. Use a fresh cloth each time.

Do not squeeze or pierce the stye. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye has settled, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or face cloths. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether drops or other treatment are suitable.

Get urgent medical help for vision changes, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, fever with swelling around the eye, or difficulty moving the eye. These features can signal a problem deeper than a simple eyelid stye.

Arrange an appointment if the lump is getting larger, discharge is heavy, redness is spreading, or symptoms are not improving with gentle care. Repeated styes also deserve review.
