Does spirometry treat COPD?
Updated

Short answer
Spirometry does not treat COPD; it measures airflow and helps confirm and assess the condition so treatment can be planned.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What spirometry contributes
COPD can cause persistent airflow limitation, with symptoms such as breathlessness, cough and mucus. Spirometry involves breathing through a mouthpiece into a measuring device. Your clinician may look at the volume and speed of exhaled air and repeat the test after a bronchodilator. The result is interpreted with your symptoms, examination and smoking or occupational history; it is not a treatment and cannot reverse airway damage during the appointment.
COPD care may include inhalers, physical activity, pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccinations, support with smoking cessation and an agreed plan for flare-ups. Read the linked COPD and spirometry pages for more context.
Before and after testing
Tell the clinician about recent infections, chest pain, dizziness, surgery and every medicine you use. Follow instructions about inhalers and strenuous activity before the appointment. During the test, seal your lips around the mouthpiece and follow the breathing prompts; pauses may be offered if you feel unwell. Keep using COPD treatment as prescribed and ask how the findings affect your inhaler technique or follow-up.
When to seek care
Seek prompt advice if breathlessness, cough or sputum becomes worse than your usual pattern, especially with fever or unusual tiredness. Emergency help is needed for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting or chest pain. Do not wait for a routine spirometry appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
Questions for your doctor
What does my airflow result mean alongside my symptoms? Which inhaler or rehabilitation options should I consider? What is my plan for an exacerbation, and when should I seek urgent help?

Questions people ask
Will spirometry improve my breathing?
No. It is a measurement. Breathing improvement comes from the management plan chosen for your COPD.
Does spirometry alone diagnose COPD?
The result is assessed with symptoms, examination and history; your clinician decides what the complete assessment shows.
