Does sinusitis cause postnasal drip?

Postnasal drip is the sensation of mucus moving from the back of the nose into the throat. With sinusitis, swelling can slow normal drainage and make secretions thicker, so you may need to swallow or clear your throat often. A cough can be worse when lying down. Colds, allergic rhinitis and irritation from smoke can also cause postnasal drip, so this symptom alone does not show that sinusitis is the cause. Facial pressure, blocked breathing through the nose and a change in discharge can provide useful context.

Drink fluids regularly and avoid smoke and strong scents. A saline spray or rinse can loosen mucus; for rinsing, use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device as directed. Sleeping with your head slightly raised may reduce throat drainage at night. A pharmacist can discuss treatments for congestion or allergy symptoms, while a clinician can decide whether a nasal steroid or another option fits your situation. Avoid taking antibiotics left over from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent care for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck or serious breathing difficulty. Arrange an appointment if drainage persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or comes with significant facial pain, fever, worsening symptoms or an unpleasant smell. A review is also sensible when a cough remains after the nasal symptoms improve.
