Does shingles cause burning skin?

Shingles develops when the chickenpox virus becomes active again in a nerve. Signals from the irritated nerve can make the skin feel hot, stinging, prickly, or painful even when the surface looks normal. A rash may later appear in a strip on one side of the trunk or face.

Burning skin also occurs with contact irritation, sunburn, nerve conditions, and other rashes. The location, one-sided pattern, associated symptoms, and timing help a clinician work out the cause.

Avoid fragranced creams, heat, and rubbing over the sensitive area. Wear soft, loose clothing and use a cool, clean compress if it feels soothing. Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new unexplained burning sensation, particularly when it is one-sided or followed by a rash. Note when it began and whether blisters, fever, or facial symptoms develop.

Get urgent advice if burning involves the eye, forehead, nose, or ear, or if you develop eye pain, vision change, hearing change, facial weakness, confusion, or severe headache. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, fever, or a spreading blistering rash. Early assessment can allow time-sensitive treatment to be considered.
