Does seborrheic dermatitis cause oily skin?

Seborrheic dermatitis tends to affect areas with more oil-producing glands. Oil can mix with shed skin and create a shiny appearance, greasy scale, or patches of irritation. Facial areas may feel itchy, tight, or tender even when they look oily. Oiliness also occurs naturally and may be influenced by hormones, weather, skincare products, or other skin conditions. The distribution, scale, redness, and symptoms help a clinician decide whether seborrheic dermatitis fits.

Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then apply a non-irritating moisturiser suited to your skin. Avoid scrubbing, picking, and strongly fragranced products, which can increase irritation. Keep hair products away from affected facial areas and remove makeup gently. If a clinician recommends a medicated cream or cleanser, use it exactly as directed and avoid applying products near the eyes unless specifically told to do so.

Seek assessment if facial oiliness is accompanied by persistent redness, scaling, burning, cracking, or symptoms around the eyelids. Get prompt care for swelling, pus, rapidly worsening pain, or fever. A clinician can check for infection, contact irritation, psoriasis, rosacea, or another condition with overlapping features.
