Does psoriasis cause cracked skin?

Psoriasis speeds up the build-up of skin cells, creating raised, inflamed areas with a dry surface. As a plaque loses moisture or stretches over a joint, the surface may form fissures. Cracks can sting, itch, or bleed when rubbed. They often occur on the hands, feet, elbows, knees, or other areas exposed to friction, although psoriasis can affect any skin region.

A crack can also be worsened by frequent washing, cold dry air, scratching, or harsh cleansers. Cracked skin has a weaker barrier, so irritation can continue even when the underlying plaque seems small.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free ointment or cream soon after washing and repeat whenever the skin feels tight. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, and pat the area dry rather than rubbing it. Cover a painful fissure with a clean dressing to reduce friction, and wear protective gloves for wet or chemical-heavy tasks.

Do not pull off attached scale or pick at the split. A clinician can confirm whether the crack is part of psoriasis and may recommend treatment for inflammation, scale, or infection. Keep using prescribed treatments exactly as directed, particularly on thin-skinned areas.

Arrange medical advice if a fissure is deep, repeatedly bleeding, increasingly painful, or stopping you from walking, gripping, or sleeping. Seek prompt care if the area becomes warm, swollen, rapidly more red, drains pus, develops a spreading crust, or you feel unwell; these changes can signal infection. Sudden widespread peeling or blistering also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the cracks fit psoriasis or another skin problem, which moisturiser and dressing suit the location, and how to adjust treatment during a flare. Mention bleeding, drainage, joint movement, and products that make the area sting.
