Does pneumonia cause fever?

When the immune system responds to infection in the lungs, it can raise the body's temperature. Fever may occur alongside cough, phlegm, chills, sweating, tiredness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. Some people with pneumonia, including older adults, may have little or no fever. The pattern of symptoms and a physical examination matter more than temperature alone.

Rest and drink fluids if you can do so safely. Wear light clothing and avoid overheating. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a fever-reducing medicine is suitable, taking account of your other medicines, pregnancy, liver or kidney problems, and allergies. Arrange medical advice if fever occurs with a new cough, breathing symptoms, chest pain, or worsening weakness.

Seek urgent care for fever with difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or a rapidly worsening condition. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a person cannot keep fluids down, is unusually drowsy, or has a serious long-term heart, lung, or immune condition. Do not rely on fever coming down as proof that the underlying problem has resolved.
