Does pneumonia cause chills?

Chills are a feeling of cold or shivering that may happen even when your temperature is normal or raised. During pneumonia, the immune response can affect temperature regulation, causing waves of shivering followed by warmth or sweating. Chills may occur with cough, fever, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and marked tiredness. Chills alone have many causes, including other infections, so they do not identify pneumonia by themselves.

Rest and drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Wear comfortable layers and avoid overheating under heavy blankets. Check your temperature if you feel feverish and record changes that may help your clinician. If pneumonia is diagnosed, use the prescribed treatment as instructed and seek advice if you cannot keep medicines down or your breathing becomes harder.

Seek prompt medical advice for chills with a persistent fever, worsening cough, breathing difficulty, chest pain or unusual weakness. Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or difficulty staying awake. These signs can indicate that the illness is affecting oxygen delivery or the wider body.
