Does pet allergy cause runny nose?

Pet allergy is an immune reaction to proteins in skin flakes, saliva or urine. Exposure can irritate the nasal lining, causing clear watery mucus, repeated sneezing, itching and congestion. Symptoms may begin soon after being near an animal, or later in a room where allergens have settled on carpets, furniture or clothing. A runny nose can also result from a viral infection, non-allergic rhinitis, temperature changes or irritants, so its appearance does not establish the cause.

Wash your hands after animal contact, keep pets away from sleeping areas and clean fabrics that collect dander. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants when done with safe prepared water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an antihistamine or nasal treatment if appropriate. Do not use decongestant sprays for longer than the product instructions, because overuse can worsen congestion.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms last, disturb sleep, cause repeated sinus discomfort or do not improve when the suspected trigger is avoided. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, faintness or widespread hives after animal exposure. Fever, facial pain, severe headache, or mucus mixed with blood also deserves clinical assessment, particularly when symptoms are persistent or worsening.
