Does nebuliser treatment help with wheezing?

Wheezing is a high-pitched sound produced when air moves through narrowed or irritated airways. A nebuliser delivers liquid medicine as an inhaled mist. Depending on the prescription, that medicine may loosen airway muscle or reduce inflammation, so the sound and effort of breathing can improve. Wheezing can also occur with an allergic reaction, infection, an inhaled object, or another lung problem, and a nebuliser may not address those causes. The clinician may ask whether the noise is new, whether it follows an exposure, and whether you have chest tightness or difficulty speaking.

Follow the prescribed dose and technique, remaining seated and breathing steadily through the mouthpiece or mask. Clean and dry the equipment according to its instructions. Do not use someone else’s medicine or assume that a louder wheeze needs extra doses. Arrange a review if wheezing is new, persists after treatment, wakes you, or repeatedly returns, because the trigger and longer-term plan may need checking.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, sudden wheezing after food or medicine, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, or inability to speak normally. Seek prompt advice when wheezing is accompanied by chest pain, high fever, coughing blood, or poor response to the prescribed treatment. A sudden onset after choking needs urgent assessment.

Ask what is triggering the wheeze, how to tell a helpful response from a concerning one, and whether your inhaler technique is suitable. Clarify cleaning, storage, the maximum instructed use, and which symptoms mean you should go to urgent care.
