Does motion sickness cause nausea?
Updated

Short answer
Nausea is a very common presentation of Motion Sickness, caused by conflicting signals about movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Conflicting movement signals
- Helpful focus
- A stable distant view and still head position
Why nausea happens
When your eyes, inner ears and body sense movement differently, the brain has difficulty combining the messages. This mismatch can trigger nausea, queasiness, sweating, dizziness, headache, extra saliva and vomiting. It may happen in a car, boat, aircraft, amusement ride or while viewing movement on a screen. Nausea has many possible causes, so nausea away from travel or movement needs a broader assessment rather than being assigned to motion sickness automatically.
What to do during travel
Look toward the horizon or a distant fixed point, keep your head still and choose a seat with the least movement when possible. Fresh air may help. Avoid reading, heavy meals and alcohol before or during the journey; take small sips of water and eat light snacks if needed. If episodes recur, ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable travel medicine before departure, since some options cause drowsiness and may not suit children, pregnancy or certain health conditions.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe headache, chest pain, fainting, confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, blood in vomit or signs of severe dehydration. Arrange medical review when nausea continues after travel, repeatedly interrupts daily activities, follows a head injury or occurs with persistent abdominal pain or fever. Keep fluids down in small sips while arranging advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which travel position may help you, whether a preventive medicine is appropriate, how to manage drowsiness, and what symptoms would suggest another cause of nausea.
