Does motion sickness cause nausea?

When your eyes, inner ears and body sense movement differently, the brain has difficulty combining the messages. This mismatch can trigger nausea, queasiness, sweating, dizziness, headache, extra saliva and vomiting. It may happen in a car, boat, aircraft, amusement ride or while viewing movement on a screen. If episodes recur, ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable travel medicine before departure, since some options cause drowsiness and may not suit children, pregnancy or certain health conditions.

Seek urgent help for severe headache, chest pain, fainting, confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, blood in vomit or signs of severe dehydration. Arrange medical review when nausea continues after travel, repeatedly interrupts daily activities, follows a head injury or occurs with persistent abdominal pain or fever. Keep fluids down in small sips while arranging advice.
