Does milia cause skin bumps?

Milia are small cysts containing keratin, a protein found in the outer layer of skin. They commonly look like white or cream-coloured beads just under the surface and often feel firm rather than soft. They may appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or other areas, and they are usually not inflamed like a typical acne spot. Skin bumps have many possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm milia. A clinician can examine the surface, location, colour, and texture when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Avoid squeezing, scraping, or piercing a suspected milium at home, especially near the eyes. Gentle cleansing and a non-irritating moisturiser can support the skin barrier. Review heavy creams, ointments, or recent skin procedures with a clinician if the bumps began afterward. If removal is wanted, a trained professional can discuss a suitable method and protect the surrounding skin. Take a clear photograph if the bumps change between appointments.

Arrange an examination if a bump is painful, hot, rapidly enlarging, bleeding, crusting, persistently itchy, or associated with spreading redness. Seek prompt care for swelling around the eye, vision changes, or a cluster that appeared after an injury or procedure. A new or changing lesion may need a different assessment rather than cosmetic extraction.
