Does meningitis cause vomiting?

Meningitis-related vomiting may occur with a strong headache, fever, neck stiffness or light sensitivity. Some people also become unusually sleepy, confused or difficult to wake. These associated symptoms matter because inflammation around the brain can affect several body systems at once.

Vomiting is also common with stomach infections, food-related illness, migraine and other conditions. Vomiting alone cannot establish meningitis. The speed of onset, hydration, alertness and accompanying neurological symptoms help clinicians decide how urgently to assess you.

If the person is alert and able to swallow, offer small, frequent sips of fluid. Rest in a safe position and record when vomiting began, whether fluids stay down and any fever or headache. Do not give food or drink to someone who is confused, very drowsy or actively having a seizure.

Seek urgent assessment when vomiting occurs with a severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, confusion or a new rash. Do not wait for dehydration to develop.

Call emergency services for difficulty waking, collapse, a seizure, breathing trouble, severe worsening headache or a purple or non-blanching rash. Suspected meningitis is an emergency because illness can progress quickly.

Ask whether the vomiting pattern suggests infection, migraine or another cause, how to replace fluids safely, which medicines are appropriate, and which changes should prompt immediate return for care.
