Does meningitis cause seizure?
Updated

Short answer
Seizure is a common presentation of Meningitis and can happen when inflammation disrupts brain function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- During a seizure
- Protect the head and do not restrain or place anything in the mouth
- Afterward
- Turn the person on their side if breathing and stay with them
- First seizure
- Needs urgent medical review
Why seizures may occur
A seizure may involve shaking, stiffening, staring, loss of awareness, unusual movements or a period of confusion afterwards. In meningitis, infection and inflammation around the brain can interfere with normal electrical activity. Fever may also contribute, particularly in children, but a seizure with suspected infection still needs medical assessment.
Seizures have many causes, including epilepsy, low blood sugar, head injury and other illnesses. A seizure does not identify meningitis by itself. Doctors consider accompanying fever, headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, vomiting, rash and changes in alertness.
What to do during a seizure
Protect the person from nearby objects, cushion the head, remove glasses and note how long the episode lasts. When the movements stop, place the person on their side if they are breathing and stay with them. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth or offer food and drink until fully alert.
Call emergency services immediately when a seizure is prolonged, repeats without recovery, causes injury, affects breathing, occurs in water or happens to someone with fever, severe headache, neck stiffness or confusion.
When urgent care is needed
Any first seizure needs urgent medical review. Emergency help is especially important when meningitis is possible, because assessment may require hospital monitoring, tests and prompt treatment. Also seek immediate help for a new rash, difficulty waking, collapse or worsening symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may have triggered the seizure, whether infection tests or brain monitoring are needed, what recovery symptoms are expected, and what safety plan to follow if another episode occurs.

Questions people ask
Should I hold someone still during a seizure?
No. Clear hazards, cushion the head and allow the movements to finish without restraint.
Can fever cause a seizure without meningitis?
Yes, especially in children, but fever with a seizure still warrants prompt assessment for serious infection and other causes.
