Short answer

A liver function test does not treat alcohol use disorder; it checks liver health while treatment addresses drinking and recovery needs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
The test assesses liver health; it does not treat alcohol use disorder.
Safety
Withdrawal planning may be needed before stopping regular heavy drinking.

What the test does

A liver function test is a group of blood measurements used to assess how the liver is working and whether liver cells or bile flow may be affected. Results can help a clinician look for alcohol-related liver injury, monitor a known problem and choose safer medicines. The results do not measure motivation, diagnose every aspect of alcohol use disorder or remove alcohol-related harm.

Results can sometimes be within a usual range even when alcohol use is causing problems, so they are considered alongside drinking patterns, symptoms, examination and other tests. A test result is one part of assessment rather than a treatment itself.

How treatment works

Treatment for alcohol use disorder may include a confidential discussion, withdrawal planning, counselling, peer support and prescribed medicines when appropriate. The safest plan depends on how much and how often you drink, previous withdrawal symptoms, other health conditions and your goals. Do not stop heavy or regular drinking suddenly without medical guidance, because withdrawal can become dangerous.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for seizures, severe shaking, hallucinations, confusion, repeated vomiting, difficulty staying awake, vomiting blood, black stools or severe abdominal pain. If you are planning to reduce alcohol and have had withdrawal before, speak with a clinician first so monitoring and medication can be arranged when needed.

Questions for your doctor

What do my liver results show, and do I need repeat testing? Could any medicine or supplement affect my liver? Is it safe for me to stop drinking at home? Which support, counselling or medicines could fit my situation?

Questions people ask

Can a normal liver function test rule out alcohol use disorder?

No. Alcohol use disorder is assessed from drinking patterns, effects and control, not from a liver test alone.

Will liver tests improve treatment?

They can help monitor liver health and guide safer care, while recovery treatment addresses alcohol use itself.
