Does hyperthyroidism cause excessive sweating?

An overactive thyroid can speed several body processes. A person may feel unusually warm and sweat more easily, sometimes alongside a racing or irregular heartbeat, shakiness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, frequent bowel movements or unplanned weight loss.

These symptoms are not specific to hyperthyroidism. Heat, medicines, hormonal changes, infection and other conditions can also cause sweating. The combination of symptoms and thyroid blood tests helps a clinician assess the cause.

Book a medical assessment if sweating is persistent or comes with heat intolerance, tremor, palpitations, weight change or neck swelling. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including products that affect thyroid function or heart rate.

Until assessed, drink fluids, choose light clothing and reduce known heat triggers. Do not start thyroid medicine or supplements based on sweating alone; treatment depends on the test results and the underlying cause.
