Can a herniated disc cause neck pain?

The discs in the neck cushion the cervical bones. If one herniates, inflammation may cause pain and stiffness around the neck. Pressure on a nerve root can send pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness into the shoulder, arm, or hand, depending on the nerve involved.

Neck pain has many possible sources, such as muscle tension, joint irritation, or an injury. The symptom by itself cannot establish that a disc is herniated. A clinician may assess neck movement, sensation, reflexes, and arm strength before considering imaging.

Keep the neck moving gently and avoid holding it in one position for long periods. Adjust screens and pillows so your head is supported without forcing it forward or sideways. Arrange assessment if pain continues, travels into an arm, or is joined by altered sensation or weakness.
