Does hammer toe cause toe pain?

Hammer toe changes the resting position of a toe. The tip may press into the ground, while the middle joint rises and rubs against the shoe. Pain can be felt at the bent joint, the toe tip, or beneath the front of the foot. Corns and thickened skin may add tenderness. Stiffness can make it harder to move the toe comfortably, but toe pain can also arise from injury, nail problems, nerve irritation, or other joint conditions.

Use shoes with a broad, deep toe box and avoid styles that squeeze the toes together. A soft protective pad may reduce rubbing, but it should not create more pressure. Take breaks from activities that repeatedly load the toe and keep movement gentle. A clinician can determine whether the toe is flexible and suggest footwear changes, exercises, padding, or further treatment.

Arrange care when pain persists, a corn keeps returning, or the toe prevents comfortable footwear or walking. Seek prompt assessment for a cut, blister that is not healing, marked redness or warmth, pus, fever, sudden deformity after trauma, or loss of feeling.
