Does a GP consultation treat shingles?

Shingles often causes pain, tingling or sensitivity followed by a one-sided rash with blisters. The GP may examine where the rash sits, when it began and whether you have fever or nerve pain. Early assessment matters because antiviral medicine may be considered during the early stage, particularly when symptoms are significant or the person has factors that increase the risk of complications. The GP can also recommend pain relief and skin care.

Take or apply each medicine exactly as directed and keep the rash clean and covered with loose clothing when practical. Do not scratch or burst blisters. Until the lesions have crusted, avoid close contact between the rash and people who are pregnant and not immune to chickenpox, newborn babies and people with weakened immunity. Wash your hands after touching the area and do not share towels or clothing.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a rash near the eye or on the tip of the nose, facial weakness, confusion, severe headache, widespread blisters or severe pain. Contact a clinician if the rash becomes increasingly red, hot or draining, or if fever develops. People with weakened immunity should seek advice early, even when the rash seems limited.

Ask whether the rash fits shingles, whether antiviral treatment is suitable, how to control nerve pain, and how long to avoid close contact. Mention pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines, because these details can change the recommended plan.
