Does an ECG Treat a Heart Attack?

The test uses small sticky sensors on the skin of the chest and limbs to capture the heart's rhythm and electrical patterns. A clinician reads the tracing alongside your symptoms, examination findings, and blood tests. The result can help show whether the heart may be receiving too little blood or whether an electrical problem needs attention.

An ECG is a snapshot of the heart's electrical activity at the time it is recorded. Changes may support a diagnosis of a heart attack, but a first tracing may not show every problem. For this reason, the emergency team may repeat the ECG and combine it with blood tests that look for heart muscle injury.

Treatment depends on the suspected type and timing of the heart attack. It may include medicines, monitoring, and a procedure to restore blood flow through a blocked coronary artery. The ECG helps the team decide how urgently to act; it does not open a blocked artery or repair injured heart muscle.

Treat possible heart-attack symptoms as an emergency. Call your local emergency service, stop exertion, and sit or rest while waiting for help. Do not drive yourself if emergency transport is available. Keep prescribed medicines nearby and tell the responders about any medicines, allergies, or previous heart problems.

Do not wait for an ECG appointment or assume that symptoms will settle because a previous ECG was normal. If you are already in a clinic or hospital, describe when the symptoms began, whether they are changing, and what makes them better or worse.

Seek emergency help for pressure, tightness, squeezing, or pain in the chest, especially when it lasts or returns. Warning symptoms can also include breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or discomfort spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw.

Symptoms can vary, and some people have little or no chest discomfort. Urgent assessment is also needed for sudden unexplained breathlessness, collapse, or severe weakness. An ECG can be part of that assessment, but waiting to arrange the test can delay treatment.

You can ask what the ECG shows, whether it needs to be repeated, and how its findings fit with your symptoms and blood-test results. Ask which treatments are being considered, what each one is intended to do, and which symptoms should prompt immediate help after you leave.
