Does dehydration cause dizziness?

Fluid loss from heat, sweating, fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea can leave you lightheaded, particularly when you stand up. Dizziness can also feel like spinning or unsteadiness. Inner-ear conditions, low blood sugar, anaemia, medication effects, and heart problems are other possible causes, so a symptom that persists should be assessed rather than attributed to fluid loss alone.

Sit or lie down until the sensation passes, then rise slowly while holding a stable surface. Take small, frequent sips of water; an oral rehydration solution may help after substantial vomiting or diarrhoea. Move to a cool place and avoid driving, climbing, or operating machinery while dizzy. If you have a fluid restriction, follow the plan from your clinician.

Call emergency services for dizziness with chest pain, trouble breathing, severe headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Seek same-day advice if you cannot drink, are passing very little urine, have repeated vomiting, or remain dizzy after resting and replacing fluids.
