Does croup cause cough?

Croup is usually an upper-airway illness that causes swelling around the voice box and windpipe. That swelling can change the sound of a cough into a bark, and the voice may sound hoarse. Symptoms can become more noticeable at night or when a child is upset and crying. A noisy, high-pitched sound while breathing in is called stridor; it is more concerning when it occurs while the child is resting.

Keep the child calm and sitting upright, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer small, frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Check breathing regularly, including during sleep, and avoid smoke or strong scents. Do not give cough medicines to a young child unless a clinician has advised them. A clinician may recommend treatment to reduce airway swelling after assessing the child.

Seek urgent medical help if the child is struggling to breathe, the skin between the ribs pulls in, the lips look blue or grey, or the child is unusually sleepy. Get prompt assessment for stridor at rest, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or a child who cannot drink. Mild barking cough without breathing difficulty still deserves medical advice if it is worsening or not settling.
