Does cortisone injection help with joint swelling?

Cortisone can dampen inflammation inside or around a joint. As inflammation settles, fluid and tenderness may decrease and movement may become easier. Swelling from an infection, a major injury, bleeding, or another untreated problem needs a different approach, and injecting into the area may be unsafe in some circumstances. The clinician will assess the joint and your general health before recommending treatment.

Have the swelling assessed rather than treating it by appearance alone. Mention fever, recent injury, skin problems, diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, allergies, and earlier injections. After treatment, follow instructions about rest and movement. Note whether the joint becomes less swollen and more mobile, and report symptoms that worsen instead of settling.

Get urgent medical advice for a hot, red, very painful joint, fever, rapidly expanding swelling, inability to bear weight, or swelling after significant trauma. After an injection, promptly report increasing redness, warmth, drainage, severe pain, or feeling faint or unwell.

Ask what is causing the swelling, whether fluid needs testing, what the injection is expected to change, how to protect the joint afterward, and what warning signs require review.
