Does a common cold cause a cough?

A cold can irritate the throat and upper airways. Mucus draining from the back of the nose may also make you cough, especially when lying down. The cough can be dry or bring up mucus, and it may remain after other cold symptoms start improving because the airway lining can stay sensitive for a while.

Drink fluids, rest, and avoid cigarette smoke or other airway irritants. Warm drinks may soothe the throat; honey may help adults and children over one year old, but it must not be given to infants. A pharmacist can advise on suitable products, including precautions for children, pregnancy, and regular medicines.

Seek medical advice if the cough is worsening, lasts longer than expected, or is accompanied by persistent fever, wheezing, or chest pain. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or sudden deterioration.

Ask whether the cough sounds like a cold or another airway problem, whether an inhaler or other treatment is appropriate, and which over-the-counter medicines are safe for your age and health history.
