Does comedonal acne cause whiteheads?

Comedonal acne develops when oil and shed skin cells collect inside a hair follicle. When the opening stays closed, the plug appears as a small, flesh-coloured or pale bump called a whitehead, or closed comedone. These spots often feel smooth or slightly raised rather than tender. They may occur on the forehead, cheeks, chin, chest, or back, and several can appear in an area with oily skin.

Whiteheads can occur alongside blackheads or inflamed pimples. Their appearance alone does not establish the cause of every bump, since milia, folliculitis, and irritation can look similar. A clinician can examine stubborn or unusual lesions.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a non-abrasive cleanser, then use products labelled non-comedogenic when possible. Avoid squeezing or scraping whiteheads; pressure can irritate the follicle and leave lingering marks. Introduce one acne treatment at a time, such as a topical ingredient recommended by a pharmacist or clinician, and follow its directions. Give the skin time to adjust and stop if marked burning, swelling, or a spreading rash develops.

Keep hair products away from acne-prone areas, remove makeup before sleep, and clean items that regularly touch the face, such as phone screens or helmet straps. A dermatologist can tailor treatment if spots keep returning or affect your confidence.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bumps are painful, deeply inflamed, rapidly changing, leaving scars, or not settling with consistent gentle care. Seek prompt medical help for swelling around the eyes, breathing difficulty, or a sudden widespread reaction. Mention any new skincare, haircare, or medication changes so the clinician can separate acne from irritation or another condition.
